Route Overview & Altitude Profile of the Manaslu Circuit

The Manaslu trek path is easy to follow. All you have to do is drive a long way from Kathmandu to a place called Machha Khola.

Then you have to walk up the valley to a village called Samagaon. After that, you keep going higher to Samdo and Dharamsala. Lastly, you climb over the very high Larkya La Pass and walk down to Dharapani.

When you are trekking Manaslu, you have to be prepared for the high, steep routes. Your climb from Samagaon up to the pass is very sudden and very steep.

Trekkers who want to explore a different approach to this beautiful Manaslu region can also consider our Manaslu Circuit Trek via Barpak - 14 Days option.

Why choose the Manaslu Circuit in 2026/2027?

Manaslu is still a very adventurous trek. It gives a feeling of challenges that are fun and difficult at the same time. If you compare it with Everest Base Camp, it sees over 40,000 people a year.

Every year, around 10,000 to 15,000 people walk the Manaslu Trail. This is much less compared to Annapurna and Everest. Manaslu is a restricted area. This means the government limits who can enter the Manaslu area. A licensed guide is required, too.

Because of these rules, the trail stays quiet. The local way of life has stayed strong here, too.

The trek starts in warm river valleys. You will cross long suspension bridges. You will pass through Gurung villages. Then the trail climbs into the Nubri region. This area feels much more Tibetan. You will see it near Samagaon and Samdo. In these villages, you will see mani walls, old gompas, and prayer flags. You will see yaks in the fields too.

This is not put on for tourists. It is simply how people live here. After you cross Larkya La, the trail opens into a huge glacier bowl. Many guides say this view is one of the best in the country.

If you want to understand more about villages, Buddhist traditions, and daily life along the route, read our guide to the Cultural Traditions of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Some trekkers will enjoy this route more than others. Here are a few examples:

  • Fit beginners who have done multi-day hikes before and want a bigger challenge than Poon Hill or the Annapurna Base Camp trek.
  • Budget travelers who are happy to join a small group with a set schedule.
  • Photographers who want clear light and few people in their photos.
  • People who care more about real village life than cafes and bakeries.

Permits & Regulations  for Manaslu Circuit Trek

Manaslu is a restricted area. You will need several permits. This means only one trekker is not allowed to apply for the main permit alone. The permit is

Here is the current price for the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) in 2026:

  • September-November: USD 100 for the first 7 days, plus USD 15 for each extra day
  • December-August: USD 75 for the first 7 days, plus USD 10 for each extra day

You will need two more permits as well. These are the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP).

The ACAP is needed because the trail crosses into the Annapurna area near the end. Your agency will arrange all three permits for you.

Here is the biggest change for 2026: solo trekkers can now join this trek. But a solo trekker must still travel with a licensed guide from a registered agency.

The old rule required at least two trekkers together. That rule is now gone. Guides still have a limit on how many clients they can take at one time.

So it is smart to book early if you want a private trip during busy months.

Checkpoints sit at Jagat, Philim, and further up the trail. These checkpoints check your permits closely. Keep copies of your papers with you at all times.

You should buy travel insurance, too. Make sure it covers trekking up to 6,000 meters and helicopter rescue.

Checkpoints may not always ask to see this insurance. But your agency almost always will, before you even start the trek.

Best Time to Trek the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Season Months Good Points Bad Points Verdict
Spring March-May Rhododendrons, good views, fewer crowds Some cloud in the afternoon Great choice
Monsoon June-August Green hills, empty trails Rain, leeches, landslide risk, poor views Better to skip
Autumn Sep-November Clear skies, best mountain views The busiest month, higher prices Best overall
Winter Dec-February Empty trails, sharp views Very cold, snow may block the pass Only for experienced trekkers

Right now, October and the first half of November give the most steady weather. Trail conditions after the 2025 monsoon have been mostly good.

Even so, always check recent trip reports before your flight. Look for news about landslides or broken bridges in the lower valley.

Difficulty, fitness & preparation for Manaslu Circuit Trek

Do not think of this Manaslu trip as an easy add-on trip. The Manaslu Circuit is between moderate and hard.

The lower half is fine for most people who are reasonably fit. The upper half is harder. This is true for the pass day and the walk down after it.  You will feel the cold air, high altitude, and tired legs; all are worth the scene you witness.

If you are a fit beginner who has some previous hiking experience, you can finish this trek. But it is definitely not the best pick as your very first big mountain trek.

When you are at a high altitude, getting used to the thin air takes time. You should not skip your acclimatization days. Doing so is not a shortcut. In fact, this is the reason why Manaslu turns from good to dangerous.

We have given below some of the training tips that will help you in this journey.

  • You can start at least eight to twelve weeks before your trip:
  • You can take long hikes, five to seven hours, on back-to-back days with a loaded pack
  • Make sure your trek includes climbing stairs or repeat hill walks that boost your stamina.
  • Build strength in your legs and middle body.
  • Break in your boots the right way, as blisters at 4,000 meters feel much worse.

Cost for Manaslu Circuit Trek

Manaslu Circuit costs depend upon several factors on the trek. The trekking accommodation you choose and the number of days that you are willing to trek are some of the major factors.

  • Standard small group or private trip: USD 1,400-2,000

What are the necessary packing lists for Manaslu?

Your preparation for Manaslu should not be very heavy. Do not overpack your bags. But do not miss out on the necessary items either.

We have given some of the must-have items for this trek below:

  • Waterproof boots that are already broken in
  • A down jacket rated to at least -10°C to -15°C
  • A sleeping bag rated to -10°C or colder (these are easy to rent in Kathmandu)
  • Trekking poles
  • Waterproof shell jacket and pants
  • Warm hat, gloves, and a buff
  • Headlamp
  • A way to make water safe to drink
  • Microspikes (these are getting more useful on the pass, even outside deep winter, because of recent snow patterns)

Note: If you are interested in taking photos, pack a few extra things.

You can bring spare batteries, because the cold makes them run out faster. Also carry a small tripod or mini-tripod. Don’t forget to bring a polarizing filter.

Lastly, carry dry bags to keep your gear safe from dust and moisture on this trek.

Safety, AMS & Acclimatization: where most of the trekkers skip for Manaslu

Manaslu takes everyone to higher heights. Altitude is the real danger on this trek. Being careful at high altitudes matters more than distance or steep hills.

The Pass day is long and very high up. Most serious problems occur when trekkers want to skip or cut off their Samagaon rest day.  This creates a threat to your life.

These are the common mistakes that we have witnessed on this Manaslu trek:

  • Trekkers normally book a 12-day trip just to save a couple of days
  • They ignore early signs of altitude sickness because they think they can handle it.
  • Some of the trekkers do not include enough warm layers for Dharamsala and the pass.

Here is what will actually help you when you get to higher altitudes:

  • Once you are above 3,000 meters, do not try to sleep more than 300 to 500 meters higher than the night before.
  • You can take the full rest day in Samagaon. Later, you can hike higher towards Birendra Lake or the way towards Base Camp
  • Drink enough water every day. It is very important for your long-hour walks.
  • You need to avoid alcohol above 3,000 meters. Alcohol dehydrates your body.
  • If symptoms get worse, go down right away. Do not wait to see if you feel better.

Conclusion

The Manaslu Circuit offers trekkers the beauty of nature and culture in Nepal. However, this destination needs preparation. The trekkers need to take the altitude seriously.

This is not the easiest trek in Nepal. Honestly, that is part of what makes it special. You should not rush this trek.

Make sure you give yourself enough days. As it is a remote trek, it is challenging. So, hire a good local guide. Get yourself trained before you start this Manaslu journey.

If you do the above things, the crossing at Larkya La will stay in your heart and memories for years. So will the traditions you get to see on this trek. You need to be updated about the routes, travel documents, and the climatic conditions.
