Kailash Mansarovar overland tour introduction

The Kailash Mansarovar overland tour is one of the most popular, budget-friendly, and acclimatization-friendly ways to do the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in 2026.

If you have ever wanted to embark on a lifetime spiritual journey to Mansarovar Lake and Mount Kailash, our Kailash Mansarovar overland tour 10 days is the best package for you.

You will start the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour from Kathmandu, Nepal. We, Himalayan Spirit Adventure, will take care of the permits, Chinese Group Visa, and logistics. You can travel hassle-free with us.

On this 10 days voyage, you travel from the lush valleys of Nepal to the arid highlands of Tibet, enjoying spectacular scenery and breathtaking mountain views of some of the tallest mountains in the world, such as Everest, Cho Oyu, Sishapangma, and Langtang Himal.

You will enter Tibet via Rasuwagadhi (Nepal) - Kerung (Border). From Kathmandu, you will reach the border in around 7 to 8 hours of scenic drive.

Upon entering Tibet, you will witness a drastic shift in the environment and scenery. The lush valleys of Nepal suddenly transition to vast, high plateaus surrounded by giant Himalayan peaks.

We take an acclimatization break in Kerung and continue the tour to Saga. The next stop is Mansarovar Lake, and then you drive to Darchen. After Darchen, you spend three days completing the Kailash Kora and return to Saga on the third day of the Kora.

Following the same route, you will drive back to Kerung and re-enter Nepal via the Rasuwagadhi border. We say goodbye in Kathmandu. As you travel from one place to another in a four-wheeler, the journey will not be that physically demanding.

However, the Kailash Kora will test your fitness, patience, and willpower. Our English-speaking guide and Tibetan representative travels with you, so you will have a safe and insightful trip.

The bustle of Kathmandu, the lush scenery of Nepal, the remote Tibetan region, long drives, delicious food, breathtaking landscapes, peace, adventure, and the divinity of Kailash will wrap your heart with emotions beyond explanation.

Spiritual importance of Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake

If you are just an adventurer and love exploring the Himalayas, you should know the spiritual significance of Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake.

If you have done enough research about the Kailash Mansarovar trip, you must know that both these places are regarded as two of the holiest pilgrimage destinations in the world.

Located in the remote Tibetan Plateau, Mansarovar Lake and Mount Kailash are sacred sites for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers.

Devotees from these religions visit these destinations to attain liberation, get rid of their sins, and for peace, purification & spiritual transformation.

➔ Mansarovar Lake (4,590 m): The Mansarovar Lake is situated south of Mt. Kailash. It is one of the highest freshwater lakes. As per the Hindu mythology, Mansarovar Lake was created in the mind of Lord Brahma. It symbolizes enlightenment, purity, and spiritual cleansing. Pilgrims believe that bathing in the sacred water of Mansarovar Lake will wash away their sins of a lifetime and bring spiritual merit.

➔ Mount Kailash (6,638 m): Mount Kailash is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva in Hinduism. Likewise, Buddhists believe this mountain is the home of Demchok (Chakrasamvara). For Jains, Kailash is the place where their first Tirthankara attained enlightenment, and Bon followers believe Mt. Kailash to be the spiritual center of the Universe.

Inner Kora: You will explore sites like Nandi Parvat, Kailash Charan Sparsh, and the Ashtapad.

Outer Kora: You will explore sites like Dira-Puk, Dolma La Pass, and ZuthulPhuk.

Places you will explore during the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour

The Kailash Mansarovar overland tour is an adventurous journey. You will visit some of the untouched destinations, temples, and monasteries on this tour.

Yam Dwar (Tarboche): The famous massive prayer flag pole

Yam Dwar is also known as Tarboche. It is the starting point of Kailash Parikrama. As per Hindu mythology, Yam Dwar is connected to the god of death, Yam.

Crossing this gateway symbolizes stepping into the sacred realm of Mount Kailash, where you leave behind worldly attachments and begin a spiritual journey of purification and transformation.

Mansarovar Lake:

Located at 4,590 meters above sea level, Mansarovar Lake is an alpine freshwater lake. It is one of the holiest lakes in Asia. The lake has a mesmerizing turquoise-blue color. Pilgrims bathe in the water of this lake for purity, peace, and spiritual cleansing.

Chiu Monastery:

Chiu Monastery is perched on a rocky hill overlooking Mansarovar Lake. It is one of the important monasteries in the Himalayas.

Chiu monastery is believed to be more than 700 years old and is associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava).

Chiu monastery is a pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists pilgrims.

Rakshas Tal:

Rakshas Tal is a saltwater lake near Mansarovar Lake beneath the shadow of Mount Kailash. This lake is believed to be associated with Ravana, the powerful king of Lanka.

He performed intense meditation and penance on the shore of this lake to seek blessings and power from lord Shiva. Mansarovar Lake and Rakshas Tal are known as Yin and Yang.

Mount Kailash:

Mount Kailash is definitely the center of this 10 days trip. Standing 6,638 meters above sea level, Mt. Kailash is a majestic black rocky pyramid. Due to Kailash's sacred status, the mountain has been strictly prohibited from being climbed.

During the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour, you will witness excellent views of this mountain from many places. Each place will present a dramatic view of the mountain and a powerful aura that will attract you.

Dirapuk Monastery:

Dirapuk Monastery is situated at 5,080 meters above sea level. It is a beautiful monastery located along the northern side of Mt. Kailash. Dirapuk Monastery is the first stop for pilgrims during the Kailash Kora.

Zuthulpuk Monastery:

Known as the cave of miracles and meditation, Zuthulpuk monastery is situated at 4,790 meters. As per the locals, this monastery is associated with Saint Milarepa.

It is believed that Milarepa meditated here. You will spend a night in Zuthulpuk after crossing Dolma La Pass on the second day of Kailash Kora.

Dolma La Pass:

Dolma La Pass is the highest point of the Kailash Kora and the whole Kailash Mansarovar overland tour. You will cross this pass while hiking from Dirapuk to Zuthulpuk.

The pass is named after the Buddhist goddess Dolma (Tara). She is the goddess of compassion and salvation. Crossing the pass is considered leaving behind karma and the beginning of a spiritually renewed life.

Crossing Dolma La Pass will be the most challenging part of the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour. You will ascend on rocky, narrow tracks, facing high altitude and low oxygen levels.

Gauri Kunada:

Gauri Kunda is another holy lake situated below Dolma La Pass. This lake is connected to Goddess Parvati (wife of lord Shiva).

As per the Hindu legends, goddess Parvati is believed to have bathed and meditated near this sacred lake.

Gauri Kunda is considered a symbol of divine feminine energy, purity, devotion, and spiritual transformation.

How does the Kailash Mansarovar tour via Kerung help in acclimatization better than other Kailash routes?

The Kailash Mansarovar route via Kerung is known as the best and safest approach to these two high-altitude destinations. And that's the reason why most modern pilgrimages to Kailash Mansarovar are operated via this route.

By doing the Kailash Mansarovar tour via Kerung, you gradually gain elevation and get ample opportunity to acclimatize and avoid altitude sickness.

Unlike the Lhasa route or the heli route, you do not experience rapid gain in elevation. Therefore, you do not feel sick and complete the journey in the best condition.

You will start the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour in Kathmandu at 1,324 meters. From here, you will travel to Kerung at 2,700 meters, which is better than 3,700 meters (Lhasa) or Hilsa (3,640 m).

Following our Kailash Mansarovar overland tour itinerary, you will take an acclimatization break in Kerung. It will help your body to slowly adapt to a high-altitude environment and decrease oxygen levels.

After Kerung, your next stopover will be Saga, a small Tibetan town at 4,640 meters above sea level. Although the elevation jump from Kerung to Saga is a lot, a rest day in Kerung will help you a lot.

Now, there is almost no elevation gain from Saga to Mansarovar Lake and from Mansarovar to Darchen, which is great because you get a couple more days to acclimatize before starting Kailash Parikrama.

In short, the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour offers:

➔ Explore Nepalese culture and tradition in Kathmandu

➔ Gradual acclimatization and easy on your body, altitude-wise

➔ Scenic drive from Nepal's lush valleys to the high Tibetan Plateau

➔ More cost-effective

➔ Stunning mountain vistas, including Everest and Cho Oyu

➔ Accessible for all nationalities

➔ No rushing

Fitness requirements for the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour

➔ Kailash Kora total distance: 51 km (33 miles)

➔ YamDwar to DiraPuk: 17 km (10.5 miles)

➔ DiraPuk to ZuthulPhuk via Dolma La Pass: 22 km (13.6 miles)

➔ ZuthulPhuk to Zongdui: 12 km (7.4 miles)

The Kailash Mansarovar overland tour is not challenging apart from the three-day Kailash Kora part. If you are planning to perform Kailash Kora (51 km), you at least have to be in good health and decent shape.

Kailash Kora involves around 5 hours of walking each day. You will cross a high mountain pass above 5,500 meters. The terrain involves ascending, which will put pressure on your knees.

Likewise, the Kailash Kora terrain is rugged, steep, and narrow. In addition, you will deal with high altitude, strong winds, unpredictable weather, cold climate, and lower oxygen levels.

All these require good fitness and determination. We have seen even 60-70-year-olds complete the Kailash Kora on the sheer basis of faith. If you prepare a little ahead of the trip, the journey will become more rewarding and less taxing.

Pilgrims who cannot walk 51 km still wish to do Kailash Kora can rent a horse and a horseman. Charges not covered in the Kailash Mansarovar overland tour package.

Recommended pre-trip physical training:

  • Cardiovascular experience: Regular brisk walking, cycling, hiking, or swimming
  • Uphill walking or stair climbing
  • Day hike if possible
  • Mental training: Research accommodation, food, services, climate, and other details about the Kailash Mansarovar tour and prepare your mind accordingly.
