The adventurous Manaslu Circuit route, combined with the hidden Tsum Valley, is an unforgettable journey around the world's eighth-highest mountain. From the hot and humid mid-hills to the alpine, the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley trek is unlike any other trek in Nepal.

This 23-day trip to Nepal presents the bustle and iconic historical sites of Kathmandu, and takes you on a life-changing voyage to the highlands close to the Tibetan border, surrounded by giant mountains, lush hills, and deep gorges.

The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley trek offers the very best of the western Himalayan range in Nepal. You will explore the steep gorges, massive waterfalls, soaring mountains, lush valleys, pristine villages, and dramatic glacier moraines on this trek.

The side trip to Tsum Valley adds more adventure, challenge, and mystery to the journey. Trekking to Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley is demanding, but the experience it offers is unlike any other famous trekking routes in Nepal.

The journey well balances adventure with cultural exploration, rich biodiversity, isolation, and tranquility. The lower trails showcase terraced fields and rhododendron-covered hills, and the upper Manaslu trails have yak caravans, Tibetan refugee villages, and an ancient salt trade route.

With the rise in elevation, you will be embraced by giant hills covered with junipers and snow-capped mountains. The trails are narrow in many sections and require expert guidance.

The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley trek is wilder than you may think. This trek truly tests your strength, patience, willpower, and determination. You have to be willing to get uncomfortable to conquer this incredible trekking route in the Himalayas!

Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley trek itinerary explained

The Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley trek starts with a long, scenic drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. From here, you will begin hiking following the Manaslu Circuit route.

The trail goes along the Budhi Gandaki River and passes by many rhododendron forests and beautiful villages. After Machha Khola, you will spend a night in Jagat and Lokpa. The Tsum Valley trail is separated from Lokpa village.

You will leave the Manaslu Circuit route and trek northeast to Tsum Valley. Known as "Beyul" (hidden valley) by the locals, your time in Tsum Valley will be memorable. Charming villages set across lush hills and tall mountains are blissful.

After Lokpa, you will hike to Chumling and continue to Chhokang Paro. The trail enters the inner Himalayas and ascends to Upper Tsum. Then, you will hike to Nile via Milarepa Piren Phu Cave.

From Nile, you will ascend to Mu Gompa and Chhule for acclimatization. Some trekkers also prefer to spend a night in Mu Gompa. There is no teahouse, so a monastery night stay is necessary.

At Mu Gompa, you will find yourself living in a scene from a movie. The views and the peace are outstanding. After the Mu Gompa excursion, you will descend to Gho village following the same trail back or taking an alternative route via Ranchen Gompa.

Most trekkers return to the Manaslu Circuit route after this point, but we will hike to Ganesh Himal Base Camp. Following an isolated trail along Langdang Khola, you will gradually ascend to Gumba Lungdang.

From here, you will hike to Ganesh Himal Base Camp via Torogumba Glacier. After exploring the base camp of Ganesh Himal, you will trek back to Chumling and descend to Deng. Now, you are back on the Manaslu Circuit.

The trail from here continues to Larkya La Pass. You will spend nights in Namrung, Shyala, Sama Gaon, Samdo, and Larke Phedi (Dharamsala). Larke Phedi is the last resting point before crossing the Larkya La Pass.

In between these villages, you will also hike to Pungyen Gompa, Manaslu Base Camp, Birendra Lake, and Rui La Pass (very close to the Tibetan border).

Crossing the Larkya La Pass will be the most challenging section of the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek. It will take you 8 to 10 hours, depending on your pace, to cross the pass. You will navigate narrow, steep trails and walk through glacier moraines and cross steep ridges.

After Larkya La, the trail descends to Bimthang. From here, you will descend to Tilje, where the trek ends, and drive back to Kathmandu via Besisahar.

Why do the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley trek?

  • Incredible landscapes and mountain views: The landscapes and mountain views on the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley trek are out of this world. As the trail is spread over varying altitudes, you will see diverse landscapes. Likewise, the trek offers breathtaking mountain panoramas of Manaslu, Shring Himal, Naike Peak, Boudha Himal, Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, Himlung Himal, Kanguru, etc.
  • Adventurous, daring trek: The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley trek route is not for all trekkers. It requires Himalayan trail awareness, so it is recommended for trekkers who have previous experience. Long hours of walking, steep ascents and descents, suspension bridges, narrow tracks, glacier moraines, etc, make the trek incredibly adventurous and satisfying.
  • No crowd of trekkers: Compared to Everest and Annapurna, very few trekkers visit Manaslu, and on top of that, do the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley trek. You will meet a handful of other trekkers on the trail (especially on the Manaslu Circuit), but the trails are not busy. So, if you love tranquility, this trek is for you.
  • Explore the inner Himalayas in Tsum Valley: Chumling village onwards, you will enter the inner Himalayas as you hike to Mu Gompa. The scenery and the vegetation are much more exotic and untouched. Mountains and glaciers are very dominant.
  • Tsumba community: The locals of Tsum Valley are known as Tsumba. They are one of the indigenous groups of Nepal that are native to the Tsum Valley. They have their own language and follow Tibetan Buddhism.
  • The Nubri Valley: The Nubri Valley starts from Ghap onwards. It is in the Upper Manaslu area. The locals speak the Nubri language and are recognized as the Nubri community.
  • Ancient Tibetan Buddhism heritage: Locals in both Tsum Valley and the Manaslu Circuit route follow Tibetan Buddhism. Samdo is a Tibetan refugee village and shares an ancient salt trade route to Tibet. The proximity of Tibet has led to a strong Tibetan Buddhism influence on the region.
  • Exciting side hikes (Ganesh Himal Base Camp, Manaslu Base Camp, and Rui La Pass): We do side hikes during acclimatization days. You will go on a side hike to Mu Gompa, Chhule, and Ganesh Himal Base Camp in Tsum Valley. Likewise, on the Manaslu Circuit, you will go on a side hike to Pungyen Gompa, Birendra Lake, Manaslu Base Camp, and Rui La Pass.
  • Cross the Larkya La Pass: The Larkya La Pass connects Manaslu with Annapurna. It is a 5,106-meter mountain pass. Crossing the pass is challenging but also rewarding. Crossing this pass will give you a grand end to the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley trek.
  • Short but memorable time in Kathmandu: You will spend a short time in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. But this short time in this city of temples will be very memorable for you. The bustle of Thamel, kind locals, busy markets, and numerous tourist sites are the life of this city. Explore as much as you can.
