The Langtang Gosaikunda trek is one of the most incredible high-altitude walks that is both adventurous and culturally divine. On this 14-day journey in Nepal, you will explore the bustling markets and ancient historical sites in Kathmandu and travel to the central Himalayan range.
The Langtang Gosaikunda trek is best for travelers who want to explore the Himalayas in Nepal but do not want to go far from Kathmandu. One of the most appealing factors about the Langtang Gosaikunda trek is the trail's proximity to Kathmandu.
You can reach the starting point of the Langtang Gosaikunda trek in just 6 to 7 hours of jeep ride from Kathmandu. You will be close to Kathmandu yet so deep into the mountains. The journey is adventurous and culturally enriching.
Our Langtang Gosaikunda trek includes a hike to Langtang Valley and Gosaikunda Lake. The trek is divided into two parts. From Syabrubesi, the starting point of the Langtang Gosaikunda trek, you will first hike to Langtang Valley.
It will be an adventurous, scenic walk through forested hills, a glacier field, and pastures. We have tweaked our Langtang Gosaikunda trek itinerary.
Instead of following the standard route via the busy Lama Hotel, you will follow a less-crowded route that goes through Sherpa Gaon. This route offers an authentic experience and close interactions with the locals.
After Sherpa Gaon, you will ascend to Langtang village via Lama Hotel. Langtang village is the heart of the Langtang Valley. It was completely destroyed in the 2015 earthquake.
A great effort was required to rebuild the village from scratch, and today the Langtang village is fully in operation to welcome trekkers from all around the world. From Langtang village, you will ascend to Kyanjin Gompa. It is the highest settlement in the Langtang Valley.
From here, you will hike to Tserko Ri and Kyanji Ri, two viewpoints that offer breathtaking mountain vistas. While in Kyanjin Gompa, you will also explore the Kyanjin Hydropower House and local yak cheese factory.
Following the same route, you will descend back to Lama Hotel. Now begins the trek towards the sacred Gosaikunda Lake. The trail becomes much steeper and rockier and goes through densely forested hills.
You will spend the night in Thulo Syabru and Shin Gompa before reaching Gosaikunda Lake. The Gosaikunda Lake is a pilgrimage spot. The full moon of August brings a huge crowd of pilgrims to Gosaikunda Lake.
You will spend a night at Gosaikunda Lake and follow the same route that you used while ascending to descend to Dhunche. The Langtang Gosaikunda trek 14 days ends in Dhunche. You'll drive back to Kathmandu from here.
What to expect during the Langtang Gosaikunda trek?
The Langtang Gosaikunda trek presents an adventurous trekking opportunity in Nepal. It is a moderately challenging trek, so even beginner trekkers with preparation can complete it.

Diverse landscapes and scenic trails:
During the Langtang Gosaikunda trek 14 days, you will experience an excellent walk through impressive landscapes. In a very short time, you will witness a breathtaking transition of landscapes from lush subtropical forests to deep river valleys, pastures, and glaciers.
Every day, the trail unfolds different scenery. In no time, you will travel from lush hills to alpine meadows and rocky high altitude terrain. Waterfalls, rivers, and streams change to rockfall/landslide-prone areas, glacier fields, and rocky alpine terrain.
The Tamang community:
The Langtang region is home to many Nepalese communities, and among them, Tamangs are one of the major inhabitants. The Langtang region is known for the Tamang people. They are believed to be the descendants of Tibetans.
Tamangs follow Tibetan Buddhism. Their traditional clothes and culture resemble Tibetans. In short, you will see a great amalgamation of Tibetan and Nepalese cultural heritage.
Monasteries, stupas, and mani walls:
The Langtang Gosaikunda trek route has many monasteries, stupas, mani walls, chortens, and prayer flags. Kyanjin Gompa and Shin Gompa are two major ancient monasteries you will explore during the trek.
High altitude adventurous walk:
You will touch almost 5,000 meters during the Langtang Gosaikunda trek. Every day, you will walk 5 to 6 hours a day, depending on your pace. Tserko Ri (4,984 m/16,351 ft) is the highest point you will reach on this trek.
To reach here, you will gradually ascend through varying terrain, climates, and elevations. The trekking conditions will be different each day. The higher you ascend, the more exposed to the alpine environment you are, leading to an incredible high altitude experience.
The Tserko Ri hike:
Tserko Ri is a viewpoint above Kyanjin Gompa. It is also the highest point in the Langtang Valley. The route to Tserko Ri is challenging. You have to hike on tricky, steep, rocky terrain.
The Tserko Ri hike ends your journey in the Langtang Valley. After this hike, you will descend to Lama Hotel following the same route. From Lama Hotel, you can trek to Gosaikunda Lake or descend to Syabrubesi to end the journey.
The Gosaikunda Lake:
The Gosaikunda Lake is definitely one of the main highlights of this 14-day trek. Trekking to this lake is adventurous. There are not one but 108 lakes in this region, and among them, Gosaikunda Lake is the biggest.
Trekkers can also explore the Sarswatikunda and Bhairavkunda lakes that are enroute to Gosaikunda Lake. It is believed that taking a dip in this lake cleanses your sins. Not only Hindus but also Buddhist pilgrims visit the Gosaikunda Lake.
Spectacular mountain vistas:

Stone guesthouses and an authentic mountain experience:
The Langtang Gosaikunda trek route is not over-commercialized. It perfectly balances the essence of an authentic mountain experience with comfortable accommodations and meals.
The journey is backed by comfortable rooms, hearty Nepali meals, limited but melting hot showers, and memorable interactions with the locals and fellow trekkers.
The Gosaikunda Lake's link to the great cosmic event of Samudra Manthan
The Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean) is the event when the gods and the demons churned the ocean to obtain Amrit (nectar of immortality).
During the event, a deadly poison emerged and threatened to destroy the Universe. Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the Universe. The poison burned his throat and caused immense pain.
To soothe his throat, Lord Shiva struck his trident in the mountain to release water. It led to the creation of Gosaikunda Lake and also gave the name Neelkanth (the blue-throated one)to Lord Shiva. This is the ancient legend behind the Gosaikunda Lake for Hindus.
The Gosaikunda Lake's importance for Buddhists
Likewise, for Buddhists, the Gosaikunda Lake is a sacred high-altitude meditation site. The lake is believed to be blessed by natural and spiritual energies, and the mountains around it are considered the home of the protector deities (lu and dakini spirits).
In fact, the Gosaikunda Lake is also associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). They believe circumambulating around the lake and offering prayer flags is great for seeking balance, healing, and spiritual blessings.
