The Tsum Valley trek offers an authentic Himalayan adventure. Far from the well-trodden paths, you will trek in a hidden Himalayan valley where time seems to stand still. Unlike the famous trekking destinations in Nepal, the Tsum Valley offers a raw and unparalleled experience.
It is a peaceful journey around Mt. Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain in the world. The Tsum Valley trek route was introduced in 2008 as one of the restricted trekking regions in Nepal for foreigners.
Since then, only a handful of tourists visit this trekking region every year. Trekking in the Tsum Valley is not the same as other trekking regions in Nepal. This trek requires special permits and preparation.
Likewise, you have to be in good shape to do this trek. This is our Tsum Valley trek package. It is a 16 days trek. Unlike most Tsum Valley trek itineraries, our itinerary includes an excursion to both Mu Gompa and Ganesh Himal Base Camp.
If you are on a short vacation, we can help you customize a short Tsum Valley trek itinerary. Likewise, if you have time and wish to explore the complete Manaslu region, check out our Manaslu Circuit trek with Tsum Valley package.
Where is the Tsum Valley trek located?
The Tsum Valley trek takes you northwest of Kathmandu. The valley is located in the Gorkha district, next to the famous Manaslu Circuit. Additionally, the Tsum Valley is a protected area under restricted area regulation and the Manaslu Conservation Area program. You can also understand that the Tsum Valley is very near Mt. Manaslu, the 8th-tallest mountain on Earth.
What is it like doing the Tsum Valley trek for 16 days?
Tsum Valley is known as Beyul. It means a hidden valley in Tibetan Buddhism. Likewise, the word Tsum means vivid, which refers to the valley's vibrant culture and landscapes.
You may wonder how a place this remote, untouched by any major city in Nepal, can have a rich culture and heritage. Well, that's the beauty of Nepal.
You will find people living in the remotest corners of the Himalayas in Nepal, with a deeply rooted culture and traditions that have evolved alongside the mountains and glaciers.
During the Tsum Valley trek, you will have the opportunity to meet the Tsumba community, one of the indigenous groups in Nepal. The upper Tsum Valley is very close to Tibet. Therefore, the locals' lives, beliefs, practices, and norms are deeply entwined with Tibet.
As the trail ascends and descends through different villages like Chumling, Chhokang Paro, Nile, Gho village, and Gumba Lungdang, you will have ample opportunities to see the lifestyle of the locals. There are also many monasteries, stupas, chortens, and prayer flags scattered along the trail.
The villagers are used to seeing tourists and have also developed comfortable teahouses for them. Yet their lives still remain untouched by modernization.
Beyond the cultural richness of Tsum Valley, it boasts breathtaking natural beauty, dramatic landscapes, vast alpine meadows, and towering Himalayan mountains such as Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, Boudha Himal, Shringi Himal, etc.
The trail goes through deep river gorges and subtropical forests to high alpine meadows and glacier moraines. The Tsum Valley trek route is not commercialized. Therefore, the trail is peaceful.
The Tsum Valley trek is our top recommendation to trekkers seeking less crowded trekking routes in Nepal. Though this trek has a fair share of challenges, navigating them is not impossible, especially when you trek with Himalayan Spirit Adventure's expert team.
Overall, the Tsum Valley trekking is an adventurous and tranquil odyssey that promises a lifetime experience, heart-warming hospitality, and captivating mountain vistas.
Why do the Tsum Valley trek?
The Tsum Valley trek 16 days is a unique trekking experience. Below, we have shared the top reasons that make the Tsum Valley trek a must-do trek in Nepal:
The exotic flora and fauna in Tsum Valley:
The Tsum Valley is protected under the Manaslu Conservation Area. The vegetation differs between low hills, mid hills, and high hills. You will discover a wide variety of flora while trekking from Machha Khola to Mu Gompa.
Likewise, Tsum Valley is also home to many beautiful and endangered animals and birds. Species such as red panda, snow leopard, grey wolf, Himalayan black bear, blue sheep, tahr, etc, call this area their home.
*Note that it is very rare to spot wild animals like the snow leopard and red panda during trekking.
The indigenous Tsumba community:
The locals of Tsum Valley are known as Tsumba. They are one of the indigenous communities of Nepal. They have Tibetan origins and a similar culture, traditions, and beliefs.
The locals are welcoming and friendly. Very few outsiders visit Tsum Valley, so they are always eager to meet new people and show their lives in this remote part of the world.
Ancient monasteries and stupas:
The Tsumba community follows Tibetan Buddhism. There are many monasteries and stupas in the Tsum Valley. During the trek, you will explore the Mu Gompa and Ranchen Gompa.
These two are major monasteries and a nunnery in Tsum Valley. Likewise, you will visit the Piren Phu Cave on the way to the Nile settlement. If we turn the history pages, it is believed that the great Buddhist saint Milarepa meditated in this cave.
Locals are very much connected to their roots and faiths. They consider valleys and mountains their gods. And trekkers are supposed to respect that. We say the Tsum Valley trek, a mystical journey, for a reason.
Ganesh Himal Base Camp excursion:
The Ganesh Himal Base Camp excursion adds more adventure and wilderness to the Tsum Valley trek. Most trekkers who do the Tsum Valley trek usually do not visit the Ganesh Himal Base Camp. So, this part of the route is even more remote and secluded.
You will traverse isolated areas to reach the Ganesh Himal Base Camp. Gumba Lungdang is the last settlement before this base camp. From here, you will walk along Torogumba Glacier and pass by Torogompa Kharka 1 and 2.
The stunning scenery and mountain vistas:
Depending on the season you are trekking, the landscapes may differ. Nevertheless, the views are exceptional in each season. As you trek through different climatic zones and altitudes, you will witness a drastic transition of landscapes throughout the Tsum Valley trek.
Subtropical forests change into dense alpine forests and open up to alpine meadows. Scenery changes from lush green hills to barren, rocky peaks and snow-covered towering mountains. Likewise, glaciers, sunrises, and sunsets add more beauty to the views.
Empty trails and raw adventure:
Very few tourists know about the Tsum Valley trek, and even among them, very few do this trek. Therefore, the trail is peaceful throughout the year. The Tsum Valley trek is a great option for trekkers looking for a less crowded trek in Nepal.
A smaller number of trekkers means the tourism infrastructure in Tsum Valley has not grown like the Annapurna and Everest regions. So, the valley remains untouched. You will have an authentic trek experience.

Charging, hot shower, internet, and toilet during the Tsum Valley trekking
*At higher elevations, the costs of additional services are usually higher.
- Charging: For the Tsum Valley trek, we highly recommend that trekkers carry a solar power bank and spare batteries for backup. In tea houses, you can charge your electronic devices by paying a few bucks (Nrs 100 to Nrs 300).
- Hot shower: Hot showers are another paid service in the tea house. Taking a shower daily during the trek is not feasible due to the cold and, of course, the high price. So, maintain a balance between taking hot showers and using wet tissues.
- Internet/mobile network: WiFi is available in some villages. Note that Tsum Valley is more remote than the Manaslu Circuit, so the network in general is not as decent as on the Manaslu Circuit. Take it as an off-grid trip.
- Toilet: Western-style toilets are limited on the Tsum Valley trek route. Squat toilets are mostly available everywhere. Pack toilet paper, soap, hand sanitizer, and all other toiletries for the trek.
Is the Tsum Valley trek suitable for you?
Are you interested in discovering the trails that are not usually picked by tourists in Nepal? Do you want to explore the remotest corners of the Himalayas? If yes, then the Tsum Valley trek is suitable for you.
The Tsum Valley trek best suits travelers who do not mind simple tea house accommodations and very limited services. If you enjoy challenging yourself physically and mentally and pushing your limits, you will love this trek.
Likewise, the Tsum Valley trek is also perfect for trekkers seeking peaceful trails and deeply rooted Himalayan heritage. In short, the Tsum Valley trek combines adventure with cultural experiences, tranquility, and heavenly scenery.

It will improve your stamina and strength, which will be quite helpful during trekking. Note that the Tsum Valley trekking route is steep and rocky. You have to push yourself physically and mentally a lot.
- Strength training: Strength training will make you stronger. Focus on your core, back, shoulders, and legs. Weight training in the gym is one of the best ways to become strong.

Is Tsum Valley a restricted area in Nepal? Why?
Tsum Valley is a restricted area in Nepal for foreigners because the upper part of the valley touches the Nepal-Tibet border. Likewise, the Tsum Valley's fragile ecosystem and ancient cultural richness also require regulated tourism.
By making Tsum Valley a restricted area in Nepal, the government has not only maintained the border security but also well protected the valley's natural and cultural beauty.
Restricted area trekking rules for Tsum Valley:
