Lukla is famously known as the gateway to the Everest region. It is quickly and easily accessible from Kathmandu. But is it the only way to travel to the Everest region? No. There is an alternative road route that connects Kathmandu with the lower part of the Everest region, Phaplu.
Phaplu is located 270 km east of Kathmandu. From Kathmandu, you can reach Phaplu (2,413 m) in around 8 to 9 hours of driving. The road is good halfway, but once you begin ascending, the bumpy sections increase. It will be an adventurous ride, but not overwhelming like the Lukla flight.
Get your trekking essentials and withdraw money in Kathmandu because Phaplu onwards, you will not have a chance to buy anything or withdraw money until Namche Bazaar. Kindly note that the Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out package is also known as the Everest Base Camp trek from Phaplu.
Why do the Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out?
Starting the Everest Base Camp trek by road allows you to dive into the journey comfortably and calmly. There will be no sudden high gain in elevation, and you will also explore the untouched lower section of the Everest region.
Explore the lower part of the Everest region:
The Everest region is called the SoluKhumbu region in Nepal. You may have heard the word Khumbu region, but Solu is less mentioned. Trekkers usually do not get to explore the Solu area during the famous 14-day EBC trek.
The Solu region includes villages such as Phaplu, Nunthala, Bupsa, Surke, etc. The over-commercialization of the Lukla route has shadowed the lower part of the Everest region, so these villages remain pristine.
So, if you want to experience authentic Sherpa villages and mountain lifestyle, the Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out is the best option.
Start the Everest Base Camp trek without Lukla flight:
The Lukla flight is definitely not for everyone. We do not call this flight nerve-racking without a reason. So, here we are bringing you a no Lukla flight option.
If you have ever dreamed of trekking to Everest Base Camp but were not sure of taking domestic flights in Nepal, we have good news for you. You can do the EBC trek without the Lukla flight.
As the name of our Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out program suggests, you start the trek without the Lukla flight but end it with the Lukla flight. If you have 3-4 extra days, you can avoid the Lukla flight while returning, too.
Enjoy the peaceful trail until Phakding village:
Only a handful of trekkers do the EBC trek from Phaplu. So, the trails are almost empty even during the peak trekking seasons. If you love peace and serene nature, you will love this trek.
After Phakding, you will join the main EBC trail, so the trails are less peaceful. To be honest, the bustling side of the EBC trail also has a very delightful and powerful energy to it. So, you will enjoy a perfect balance of peaceful and lovely trekking.
Less risk of altitude sickness:
The Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out starts at 2,413 meters. It is lower in elevation than Lukla, and you also do not gain this altitude in 30 minutes. From Kathmandu, you will drive for around 8 hours to reach 2,413 meters.
The trail then keeps you under 2,500 meters for the next four days and leads you to Phakding at 2,610 meters on the fourth day. Your body will experience very slow gain in elevation, which is ideal for avoiding altitude sickness.
Moreover, our Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out itinerary also has two rest days further on the way. So, you have ample time to acclimatize and avoid altitude sickness.
Meet with many mountain communities, including Sherpas:
The Everest region is home to the Sherpa community. Other ethnic groups, such as Rai, Lama, Limbu, and Bhotiya, also live in this region.
Compared to the villages at high altitude, you will get a better chance to learn the lifestyle and culture of these communities in the villages at lower elevations.
Likewise, you will explore many stupas, mani walls, chortens, prayer wheels, prayer flags, and monasteries along the trail.
See the beautiful, lush side of the Himalaya:
You may think the Himalayas are cold, barren, and snowy. Well, a part of it is cold, barren, and snowy. But the foothills of the Himalayas are unbelievably lush.
The Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out lets you explore the lush side of the Himalayas. You will explore rhododendron, pine, and magnolia-covered hills, terraced fields, waterfalls, rivers, and meadows.
Witness stunning mountain vistas as you ascend higher:
Trekking to Everest Base Camp is all about mountain exploration, and it includes mountains more than you can imagine. You will see mountains from the very first day of the trek.
The lower parts of the trail mainly offer views of mountains like Thamserku, Kangtega, Khumbila, and Kongde Ri. As you ascend above Namche Bazaar, you will see mountains like Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Pumori, Chamlan, Cho Oyu, Makalu, etc.
Enjoy the bustle of the main EBC route and explore villages like Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Lukla:
Please note that you will not miss anything by doing the Everest Base Camp trek from Phaplu. In fact, this itinerary offers a perfect balance between peaceful and bustling trails.
You will explore untouched Sherpa villages like Nunthala, Bupsa, and Surke, and gradually ascend to famous Sherpa villages like Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche.
Acclimatization hikes:
On your acclimatization breaks, you will go on side quests and hike to viewpoints. From Namche Bazaar, you will hike to the Hotel Everest View. Likewise, from Dingboche village, you will hike to Nangkartshang Peak.
Explore Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar:
Everest Base Camp (EBC) and Kala Patthar are the highest points you will reach during the Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out 18 days trip. EBC is the lap of the highest mountain in the world. Similarly, Kala Patthar is a popular viewpoint to witness a spectacular view of Mt. Everest.
Experience the Lukla flight:
You will end the Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out with the Lukla flight. It will be a short but thrilling flight. In the spring and autumn seasons, the Lukla flights take off and land at Ramechhap Airport due to high air traffic at Kathmandu Airport.
Our team will be present at the airport to pick you up and transfer you to the hotel. From Ramechhap Airport, it will take 4 to 5 hours to drive to Kathmandu.
Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out 18 days: itinerary summary
The journey from Phaplu to Phakding: a peaceful route
The trek begins from Phaplu, a beautiful mountain town. You will walk through the town and gradually ascend to Nunthala settlement (2,330 m). The trail follows rugged hillsides and passes by terraced fields. From Phaplu, the trail ascends to Tak Sindo La Pass.
You might be wondering about crossing a mountain pass on the first day of the trek? Isn't it too much? Well, no. It is not a high mountain pass. The Tak Sindo La Pass is 3,071 meters tall and easy to cross.
You will see excellent mountain vistas of Thamserku, Kusum Kanguru, and Kangtega Peak from here, and colorful prayer flags fluttering in the air. After crossing the pass, you will walk to Taksindu Gompa. From here, walk through small Sherpa settlements and reach Nunthala.
Nunthala is another very pretty village where you can see a lot of yaks, horses, and mules. These animals carry essential supplies up in the mountains. Leaving Nunthala, you will trek to Bupsa. The trail descends and crosses a suspension bridge over the Dudh Koshi River.
After that, you will pass by a rocky, unstable section and begin ascending on a steep slope to Jubing village. The Rai community mainly inhabits this village. The trail then climbs stone stairs and passes by terraced fields to join a forested hill.
After a lunch break at Kari Khola, you will trek for a couple more hours to reach Bupsa. It is also a Sherpa village. You can meet trekkers who have started their EBC trek from Jiri in Bupsa village. From Bupsa, your next destination is Surke village.
The trail ascends to Kari La Pass (2,800 m). You may share the trail with mules carrying supplies. From Kari La, you will ascend and descend through terraced fields and forested hills to Surke. The land in Surke is quite fertile and is located below Lukla.
As you continue trekking ahead of Surke, you will follow an uphill trail to Chaurikharka. Compared to the last few days, the terrain is not that steep. The trail passes by waterfalls, mani walls, chortens, and terraced fields to Phakding village.
Join the main Everest Base Camp route from Phakding:
Phakding onwards, you will follow the bustling Everest Base Camp route. The trail goes alongside the Dudh Koshi River, crossing it multiple times on the way. There are many police check posts all around the trail, but the main one is in Monjo.
The Sagarmatha National Park begins after Monjo village. Namche Bazaar is your next stop after Phakding village. On the way, you trek through villages like Monjo and Jorsalle and pass by Top Danda. If the weather is clear, you may get to have the first glimpse of Mt. Everest from Top Danda.
The last part of the trail that leads to Namche Bazaar is steep and can be challenging to traverse. Namche Bazaar is the biggest Sherap settlement. We take an acclimatization break in this village.
It allows your body to rest and recover for further high-altitude walking and to adjust to the elevation. Acclimatization days include hiking early in the morning to a nearby viewpoint. We have two acclimatization days in our Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out itinerary.
One in Namche Bazaar and another in Dingboche village. From Namche Bazaar, you will hike to Hotel Everest View and Nangkartshang Peak from Dingboche village. Leaving Namche Bazaar, the trail ascends to Tengboche village.
In this village, you will explore the biggest monastery in the Everest region. Further, you will trek through settlements like Deboche, Pangboche, Orsho, and Shomare to reach Dingboche village. The climate and terrain see a huge shift after Dingboche village.
The landscape is less lush and more barren and rocky. The mountains also look much loftier and closer. After Lobuche village, you will hike along the Khumbu Glacier moraine to Gorak Shep and continue to Everest Base Camp.
Reaching base camp of the tallest mountain in the world will be a major highlight of the Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out 18 days. After EBC, you will hike to Kala Patthar the following morning. Kala Patthar is a viewpoint to see an outstanding view of Mount Everest.
The return trek to Lukla after the Kala Patthar hike:
Now begins your return trek. Leaving Kala Patthar, you will follow the same trail and descend to Lobuche village. Breathtaking mountain views will keep you company. Descending takes less time than ascending and is also easier on the body.
Your night stop is Pheriche village. The trail separates from Thukla. From Pheriche, you will trek back to Namche Bazaar. The first few hours of the trek will be peaceful, then you rejoin the main route and pass by villages such as Pangboche, Deboche, Tengboche, and Phunge Thenga.
The last day of the Everest Base Camp trek drive in/fly out includes trekking from Namche Bazaar to Lukla. The trail steeply descends and passes through the lush rhododendron forests and small villages to Phakding.
Now, you will begin ascending along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing suspension bridges and small settlements on the way to Lukla. From Lukla, you will take the famous Lukla flight to travel back to Kathmandu.
